Over the years Asia University (AU) has been offering summer programs for international students of our partner universities to come to Taiwan and spend some weeks on AU campus. AU summer program has been a tradition and a brand name, and has remained the largest one in Taiwan. However, due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, AU this year decided to cancel the on-campus summer programs and offer courses online instead. Although the online program could not provide the same atmosphere as the physical classroom experiences, it alternatively created a more convenient learning mode for students from all over the world. The switch to online teaching surprisingly attracted 924 international students to register for this year’s summer program from 11 countries and 51 universities globally, including National University of Singapore (NUS), Western Sydney University, University of Malaya, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), Nihon Pharmaceutical University (NPU), Ajou University (Korea). Chiang Mai University (CMU), Prince of Songkla University (PSU), National Economics University (NEU), University of Hyderabad, Hindustan College of Arts & Science, Madanapalle Institute of Technology & Science (MITS), etc.
In our online program, participants can choose to study a wide range of subjects, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Web Design, Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Fintech, Taiwan Economy and Culture, Community Care Practice in Taiwan, Language and Culture. The courses bring together dynamic learning experience and stimulating ideas to help students better understand the recent academic development, international trends and Taiwanese culture.
International students enjoyed their online learning experience very much. In one of the courses, “Community Care Practice in Taiwan,” which adopted an online synchronous mode, students virtually “visited” a couple of caring communities in Taiwan via live broadcast. More than 100 students participated in these activities and interacted synchronously with the community workers in the chat room. Most of the students said that they were impressed by the community development in Taiwan, and that the successful models of volunteerism could be applied to their own countries. Some said that when the COVID-19 ended, they would like to visit these communities in the future.
The pandemic crisis has forced us to transform face-to-face lecturing into online instruction . It is believed that the hand-on experience is hard to be replicated in online courses. However, to our surprise, the program turned out to be more than a success and received a lot of enthusiastic responses and applauses from our international students.
This year’s summer program is a totally new experience for students, professors and administrative staff as well. Some valuable experiences can be shared with our partner universities around the globe in the field of innovative teaching pedagogies and the application of educational technology across borders.
